When restoring or furnishing a period home, it is easy to focus on the chimneypiece itself- the marble surround, the carved detail, the proportions of the mantelshelf- & overlook what sits within it. Yet the cast iron insert is every bit as important to the finished result. Get it wrong, and even the finest surround will look incomplete. Get it right, and the whole fireplace comes together as a cohesive, historically convincing whole.
What is the cast iron insert?
The cast iron insert is the functional heart of the fireplace — the register grate, fireback, and decorative front that sit within the opening of the surround. In a working fireplace it houses the fire itself; in a non-working installation it provides the visual depth and detail that the opening would otherwise lack.
Cast iron has been the material of choice for fireplace inserts since the eighteenth century. It is exceptionally durable, holds and radiates heat efficiently, & lends itself to the kind of fine decorative casting that period interiors demand. The Georgian & Regency periods, saw the cast iron insert elevated to an art form, producing designs of extraordinary intricacy- that remain highly sought after today.

Matching the insert to the period
Different periods call for very different insert designs, and choosing the right one is essential to achieving an authentic result.
Georgian inserts tend to be restrained and architectural in character, with simple hob grates, straight or slightly arched openings, and minimal ornamentation. The emphasis is on proportion and quality of casting rather than decorative elaboration.

Regency and early Victorian inserts introduce a little more richness — arched openings become more common, and decorative panels begin to appear on the cheeks and hood.
High Victorian inserts are more ornate, frequently incorporating tiles, elaborate cast detailing, and a fully arched hood.

Matching the insert to both the period of the building and the style of the surround is something we take seriously at Renaissance London. An insert that is even slightly too late or too early in style will jar with an otherwise well-considered room.
Period style and reproduction
Original cast iron inserts of genuine age are available and we stock a range at our Shoreditch showroom. We often have these in the specific size, particular decorative style & even multiples for a larger project.
This is particularly valuable in listed buildings or sensitive restoration projects, where an insert must replicate what would historically have been present- not simply approximate it.
We are also able to offer reproduction castings, which are produced using traditional sand-casting methods, working from original patterns or from drawings developed for a specific commission. The result can be a piece that is suitable in both character & style.

Choosing the right insert for your project
The key considerations when selecting a cast iron insert are the size of the opening, the style of the surround, the period of the building, and whether the fireplace will be used or purely decorative. We are happy to advise on all of these, and can help match an insert to an existing surround or design both together as a unified composition.
